After flight school in Pcola, I trained in H-34s for 5 mo w/ HMM-264 New River, NC. The volunteer 5 wk cruise w/ the Sq. subunit to Vieques PR was much better training (85 hrs that mo. in simulated combat area) and is what got me thru Nam in one piece.
Went thru 5 outfits in Nam w/ 2 other 1st Lt's: 'the orig. Air Wing gypsies' (Ralph Aye, Pat Partridge, & me), spending 3-4 mo. in ea sq. and flying off 3 carriers at times, some nights; in order, HMM-163, VMO-6, HMM-363, H&MS-16, HMM-362. Came back to New River w/ 820 helo combat missions (950 hrs in Nam).
Got into VMO-1 flying Hueys & OV-10s together, working up to IP in both. Took long range x-countries every 2-3 wkends in OVs after 6 mo. Was able to get this by selling my VMO-6 Nam time (330 hrs) to the Group assignment officer after he had assigned me to an H-46 sq. Didn't want to learn the 46 systems after flying 34s & Hueys in Nam.
Got out in late '70. Went to Air America in Thailand in May '71 for 14 mo. in Hueys. Another life changing event. Resigned when a buddy got killed after many of us had several close ones in Laos. Several ex Marines were there.
Spent the next 15 yrs on & off flying mostly civil rotor wing, mostly Gulf of Mex, and 1.5 yrs in Allegheny commuter (Be-99s) in Brideport, WV. Nothing of note since '85 when I quit flying, (stay home dad for 2 young kids or temp jobs). Been living here in VA since '86. Married 3 times, divorced since early '05. One older daughter in Oly, WA, and 2 young kids in Raleigh, NC. Will be a grandad for first time soon. I now share a condo w/ Maria my soul mate for the last 4 yrs. Where are you guys? I've thought about you all many times. Indoc and AOCS was a great time in my old stomping grounds of P'cola (esp after 3 yrs at VMI) and I revered all you guys, cadets, AOC's & NAOC's. RIP '95 our class leader, LCol. Bill Hopper, USMC ret., my best friend in the Corps. Call or write an email any time. Semper Fi!
